Widows (Black & Brown)

  • If you’ve lived in Southern California for more than one Summer, you’ve likely seen these spiders before. Although their bites are rare, they are one of the more dangerous pests we have in this region.

  • Widows do not typically move inside a home unless there is a large insect presence(food), or a long, on-going leak providing a cool damp environment.

Outside, they nest in a variety of different areas. We tend to see them under patio furniture, under BBQs, trash can lids, near gas meters, under eaves, and pretty much anywhere that is well hidden, but provides easy access to catch prey.

    • Make sure your plants are trimmed properly and not creating a suitable hiding place.

    • Remove clutter throughout the yard.

    • Store all wood on racks neatly.

    • Remove any suitable environment for their prey. (Moisture, cracks & crevices, unmaintained landscaping.

  • Aside from ants, widows are one of the main reasons general pest companies stay busy. They require applications of pesticides with a long-lasting residual effect. When we are web-dusting, we flip over patio furniture, check under trash can lids, flip over child & pet toys, and check for their webs. We apply the material to the areas they are nesting, and areas they are likely to nest in the future.
